The following review(s) are from campgrounds and/or RV resorts that we have visited during our travels. They will be listed in no particular order, yet will be listed with the nearest city first for those interested in stopping. I do not get anything from reviewing them, I am just doing it as a favor to fellow (and future) travelers.

HOLBROOK, OK RV Park- This high desert campground located directly off I-40 is a nice spot to overnight or spend a few days enjoying the local sites. Nearby attractions include the Petrified National Forest Park, Meteor Crater (yep!), Hubbell Trading Post (Navajo Reservation) and of course, the beautiful Painted Desert.

There is a great display of petrified wood outside of the office. Their camp store offers crafts, souvenirs and other items. When we checked in we were told about a free breakfast (muffins, donuts) available the next morning. We didn’t attend, but it was nice to know! The store also had a large lending library or trading book shelf.

The campground offers full hookups and I honestly didn’t explore any extras (restrooms, etc…) to know what all they offered.  The entire campground is pretty much gravel, unfortunately, some sites have these cement barriers near the electric boxes and sewer connections. If you have slides that are deep or the wrong height, you will even have problem driving in a pull-thru. Why? Some of the sites have trees – all immature, but enough of an obstacle with those with odd slides.

We actually had to ask for another site after we realized on the third attempt that we couldn’t deal with the tree or the one barrier. The gentleman checking us in was very understanding and offered us a site without any trees.

YUMA, Shangra La RV Park – This park is located right off the main highway off a “frontage road” and is easy to spot. Unfortunately there is a lot of highway noise AND military aircraft noise.

The park is clean and the people are somewhat friendly (if a little snobbish), yet this is really a park you would want to extend your stay. We did stay three days and quite frankly, I got no sleep during that time.

The campsites for larger rigs are placed in the front and very tight to get into. A good thing to note is that there are no obstacles (except utility boxes) for rigs with multiple or wide slides.

The price is rather high for overnights (which is typical in the area). They do provide you with local information and maps of restaurants and shopping centers.

Another drawback is that they apparently allow folks to solicit services inside the park. Every morning we had ads (mostly for washing your rig) stuffed in our door. That made us question their security.

I would really only recommend this as an overnight park. There are over 200 campgrounds within Yuma County, so there are many more to choose from.

BENSON, I-10 RV Park – Extremely easy to find this campground as it is right off of I-10 and beside the local KOA.

The campground is designed for larger rigs and we found ourselves in our spot without much hassle and fairly level.  The owner is friendly and the rates are reasonable – considering Cable TV hookup is included. There is a higher charge for 50 amp and extra people.

Pet owners have a special section and must pickup after their pet(s). Sewer connections are also a major concern with the owner (they get inspected) and must have secure connections as well as the sewer hose being lifted off the ground with some sort of Slunky.

The scenery is beautiful and Benson does offer modern amentities, such as Walmart. Across the street from the campground is a Denny’s. All campground visitors get a discount from Denny’s for the length of their stay.

A great campground to spend the night or a couple days to recoop from driving I-10.
