The following reviews are from campgrounds, RV resorts, casinos (blacktop boondocking) and truck stops that we have visited during our travels. They will be listed in no particular order, yet will be listed with the nearest city first for those interested in stopping.
Statesville (Charlotte) , Statesville KOA –This KOA is located off I-77 (exit 45) and honestly, if we weren’t undergoing rain and hail storms on the highway, we wouldn’t have stopped here.
The staff were not friendly at all and were rather annoying. I was trying to get checked-in quickly so we could set-up before the next storm and the woman started talking to another employee.
Something worth mentioning for those traveling during the winter – this park has it listed on their rules that there is “no running of water to prevent hoses from freezing.” That is the first time we’ve ever come across this “rule”.

WOULD WE RETURN? No
BIG RIG FRIENDLY? Depends on site
SLIDE FRIENDLY? Depends on site
EASY TO FIND? Yes, but follow signs
Hiddenite, Hiddenite Family Campground – A “brief” layover from Highway 64 that is great if you want to get away from it all. No cell phone, wireless internet, TV or satellite reception at this location. A difficult campground to find -DO NOT RELY ON GPS – follow the campground’s text directions located at their website.
We visited this location because we went emerald mining in Hiddenite (the mines are about six miles from the campground). The campground does have a laundry facility, rest rooms and pool; however it is an older facility. The number of sites is limited as there are several residents living there. Yet the owners are friendly.
A word of advice – if you venture out you while want to take a copy of the campground’s directions with you so you can find your way back!
You can find more information (and directions) at their website: www.hiddenitecampground.com
