You have probably read or saw the movie “Bridges of Madison County” and knew that they have a few covered bridges there… but did you know that John Wayne was born in Madison County? Yep! The Duke was born in Winterset (IA)  in 1907. And when you visit it, you just can’t picture such a big fella living in such a tiny house!

It probably should be a requirement of every American to visit the Duke’s birthplace. 😉 It definitely is well-worth a visit and if you find you have the time there are plenty of covered bridges to tour as well as Clark Tower.

Although at the time of our visit the area was not really Big Rig friendly, so if you can take your tow you will be able to get around more. Madison County is easy accessible from I-80 and I-35.
