In the mid 1800s Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels (Germany) to make a new home in Texas. Prince Carl chose a hill overlooking the newly founded town of New Braunfels. He called his new home site Sophienburg, which means “Sophie’s Castle”. Lady Sophia, Princess of Salm-Salm was he fiancee back in Germany. Little did he know that when he returned to Germany to get his bride-to-be, she didn’t want to leave!

The Sophienburg is now a quaint museum, located on that same home site. The museum has a variety of exhibits displaying the cultural history of the region, as well as preserving history of the 1800s.
